Tambopata Nature & Birds Adventure

After a delicious and energizing breakfast, we’ll set out by motorized boat toward the Tambopata National Reserve, an protected area home to hundreds of bird and mammal species. More than 2,300 plant species also thrive here, playing a vital role in the local ecosystem. This ecosystem helps preserve countless species, many of which are still unstudied.

We will check in at the entrance control and then proceed on a leisurely 3 km hike along the reserve trail, allowing ample time to observe and appreciate the surrounding nature. Our eager guide, passionate about recognizing the local flora and fauna, will share fascinating insights about each species: from the mighty ceiba or kapok tree to the sacred liana known as ayahuasca, a plant traditionally used in spiritual and shamanic rituals, primarily related to healing, spiritual growth, and gaining insight.

Next, we’ll continue toward the most significant lake in the jungle: Sandoval Lake. At the entrance, our guide will take a canoe with paddles and lead us on a peaceful, relaxing paddle through the lake's calm waters, giving us close-up opportunities to observe wildlife. Expect to see curious monkeys swinging from tree to tree, giant river otters swimming in family groups, or relaxing on logs after a feast of the fresh fish they caught. Today, we’ll explore the reserve at a more relaxed pace, taking advantage of the abundant wildlife surrounding the lodge. We may spot species like Black-capped Donacobius (Donacobius atricapilla), Boat-billed Heron (Cochlearius cochlearius), Long-billed Woodcreeper (Nasica longirostris), Point-tailed Palmcreeper (Berlepschia rikeri), and more. Afterwards, we’ll head to the lake for a tranquil boat ride amidst its rich biodiversity: chances are high to see white caimans, black caimans, giant river otters, freshwater turtles (taricayas), colorful butterflies resting on peaceful turtles, and more.

We will find elegant Caped Herons with white plumage standing still, looking at us suspiciously, Striated Herons patiently fishing for fish beneath the water, families of hoatzin observing us curiously, Green Ibises perched calmly on logs and the Rufescent Tiger-Heron wading with their long legs submerged. Enjoy a hearty Amazonian breakfast before preparing to leave the lodge and head back towards the city. From the river port, we’ll travel to our next lodge, hoping to spot more bird species and other unique fauna exclusive to the Tambopata region.

Upon arrival, a delicious buffet lunch will be waiting so you can rest and recharge. In the afternoon, we’ll embark on a forest trail walk through primary jungle to observe the local wildlife. This activity is somewhat unpredictable, but our local guide will expertly track the animals, increasing our chances of spotting species such as jaguar, ocelot, oncilla, peccary, tapirs, and if we're lucky, we might even see a puma.  Overnight At Collpa Inn or Terra Viva Lodge.

Early morning, we set out to witness the spectacular gathering of birds at the clay lick. We will marvel at the colorful plumage of hundreds of parrots and macaws coming together at the largest clay lick in the Amazon. This awe-inspiring show typically features species such as the Scarlet Macaw, Red and Green Macaw, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, Blue-and-Yellow Macaw, Blue-headed Parrot, Mealy Parrot.

After completing this activity, enjoy a delicious breakfast near the boats at the river beach. Later, you will begin your return to the lodge to depart for Puerto Maldonado, arriving around noon. We will transfer you to the airport.
